How much urea will one tank cover on 1 acre? How it is calculated

Assumptions used (change if you prefer other values):

  • Spreader tank volume: 20 L

  • Bulk density of urea (assumed): 0.75 kg per litre (typical range 0.70–0.80 kg/L)

  • Area of 1 acre: 4,046.86 m²

1) Simple method (recommended for listing)

Use the tank mass to estimate number of tanks per acre.

Step formula

  1. Mass of urea per tank (kg) = Tank volume (L) × Urea bulk density (kg/L)

  2. Tanks required per acre = Application rate (kg/acre) ÷ Mass per tank (kg)

Examples (with density = 0.75 kg/L and 20 L tank)

  • Mass per tank = 20 L × 0.75 kg/L = 15.0 kg

  • If application rate = 50 kg/acre → Tanks required = 50 ÷ 15.0 = 3.33 tanks (≈ 3 to 4 refills)

  • If application rate = 100 kg/acre → Tanks required = 100 ÷ 15.0 = 6.67 tanks (≈ 7 refills)

  • If application rate = 150 kg/acre → Tanks required = 150 ÷ 15.0 = 10.0 tanks

  • If application rate = 200 kg/acre → Tanks required = 200 ÷ 15.0 = 13.33 tanks

Area covered per tank (for 100 kg/acre example)

  • Area per tank = 1 acre area ÷ tanks required

  • For 100 kg/acre: area per tank = 4,046.86 ÷ 6.67 ≈ 607 m² per tank

Use these two simple numbers (kg per tank, tanks needed) on the product page so buyers can quickly plan refills.

2) Movement-based method (for advanced / operational planning)

If you want to estimate consumption from how you walk/drive the spreader:

Formula

  • Area covered per hour (m²/hr) = Spread width (m) × Forward speed (m/s) × 3600

  • Urea used per hour (kg/hr) = (Area covered per hour ÷ 4,046.86) × (Application rate in kg/acre)

Example (spread width 5 m, walking speed 1.0 m/s ≈ 3.6 km/h, application = 100 kg/acre)

  • Area/hr = 5 × 1.0 × 3600 = 18,000 m²/hr (≈ 4.45 acres/hr)

  • Urea/hr = 4.45 × 100 = 445 kg/hr

  • Tanks/hr = 445 ÷ 15 = 29.7 tanks/hr (this shows why movement estimates can give large numbers; real-world overlap, variable flow and operator speed reduce the theoretical figure)

Note: Movement-based results can be optimistic. Overlap, turns, operator speed variation, and spread pattern reduce the actual area covered. Use movement method for rough planning only.

3) Calibration tip (best practice, strongly recommended)

Calibrate on a small test plot to get the real field number for your machine and material:

  1. Mark a test area, for example 10 m × 10 m = 100 m².

  2. Fill the hopper with a measured quantity of urea (weigh it), then spread the product over that test area using your usual settings and walking speed.

  3. Weigh remaining urea. Urea used = initial weight − remaining weight.

  4. Convert: kg used on 100 m² → multiply by 40.4686 to get kg/acre.

  5. From that you get exact tanks/acre for your spreader, material and operator style.

This is the most reliable way to give customers an accurate expectation.
